Hygge is one of 2017’s biggest trends, thanks to a bevy of books published on the subject this year. So what is hygge and why are people so into it?
The term “hygge” (pronounced “HOO-gah”) originated in Denmark, a Scandinavian nation that has been recognized as the world’s happiest country. According to Meik Wiking, author of The Little Book of Hygge, “Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience, rather than about things. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home.”
Hygge is both a decor trend and a lifestyle. It’s all about surrounding yourself with coziness like candles and warm knits, and engaging in comforting activities like having a cup of tea or enjoying a home-cooked dinner with friends.
